Baro: Latin nightlife stacked four floors high on King West

Some King West rooms are restaurants that happen to have a bar; Baro is a night out that happens to serve exceptional food. Spread over four levels — a dining room, a raw bar, a loft and a rooftop patio — it turns dinner into the opening act of the evening, with a Latin soundtrack that climbs floor by floor.

The concept

The name comes from “barrio” — neighbourhood — and that is the pitch: the flavours of Central and South America, reimagined with modern, big-city swagger by chef Steve Gonzalez and the Valdez group. It is built for sharing and for staying late, the kind of place where a table of small plates slides into cocktails and the cocktails slide onto a rooftop.

What to order

Start with the ceviche program — five versions deep, from a Nikkei hamachi in yuzu-ponzu with edamame and nori to a scallop aguachile brightened with aji amarillo, pomelo and grapefruit. From there, charcoal-grilled meats, tacos and empanadas anchor the table, and the pisco-forward cocktail list does the rest.

The space

Concrete, warm timber, trailing greenery and neon set the tone across the levels: a buzzy ground-floor dining room, a raw bar one flight up, a loft above that and a summer rooftop over it all. Somewhere in the building hides Escobar, a password-only bar that changes its code by the day — the worst-kept, best-loved secret on the strip.

Who it’s for

Big groups, birthdays and after-work crews who want the meal and the party at one address, and anyone who treats dinner as the warm-up rather than the main event.

Questions and answers

Is it more restaurant or club? Both, by design — early evening is a proper dinner, later the music and the rooftop take over.

What’s the hidden bar? Escobar, an upstairs speakeasy you enter with a daily password — ask the team or watch their channels.

Do I need to book? For dinner and weekend evenings, yes — the dining floor and rooftop fill fast; smaller groups can try the bar.

Is it good for sharing? Entirely — the menu is built as small and large plates meant to travel around the table.

Is there a rooftop? Yes — an open-air top-floor patio that runs in the warmer months and is the summer draw.
