Due to his mother’s frail health, his aunt took charge of his upbringing. From the age of five, Hutt participated in theatrical productions, and by 12, he was honing his public speaking skills through specialized lessons. However, his parents disapproved of his passion for theatre, believing it to be a hobby rather than a viable career.

Hutt attended Vaughan Road and North Toronto Collegiate, where he actively participated in school operettas and dreamt of an acting career. His education was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, during which Hutt served on the Italian front. During brief leaves, he visited London to take part in theatre productions.

After the war, Hutt returned to Toronto and enrolled at Trinity College, part of the University of Toronto. There, he joined the Earl Grey Players theatre troupe, making his debut as Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Even during summer breaks, Hutt performed in summer stock theatre, refining his craft under the guidance of Robert Gill. This marked the beginning of his professional acting journey.

The Development of an Acting Career

For several years, Hutt toured with various theatre companies. In 1953, he landed a supporting role as Sir Robert Brackenbury in Richard III. His performance was well-received, and by the following year, he had earned his first award. Over the next decade, Hutt continued to play supporting roles.

In 1960, alongside his colleagues, Hutt developed a distinctive theatrical style that became a hallmark of the Stratford Festival. Audiences praised the opulent productions he crafted for the festival.

Hutt’s breakthrough role came with The Tempest. His performances at the Stratford Festival brought him national acclaim, earning standing ovations and accolades from audiences across Canada. Known for his deep emotional connection to every role, Hutt’s acting was both compelling and profoundly professional.

From 1976 to 1980, Hutt served as the artistic director of the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario, while also performing at Citadel Theatre, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and Vancouver Playhouse.

In 1994, he starred in Journey into Night, which was later adapted for the screen. Hutt retired from the stage in 2005, but in 2007, he planned to return to Stratford with his own production of A Delicate Balance. Unfortunately, health issues forced the cancellation of his plans.

Outstanding Achievements

For his immense contributions to Canadian theatre, William Hutt received numerous honours. In 1969, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada, and in 1992, he was awarded the Order of Ontario. He also received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from McMaster University and, in 2000, was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Additionally, a bridge on Waterloo Street North, spanning the Avon River in the heart of Stratford, was named in his honour. Notably, the bridge is located just a few metres from the house where Hutt lived for many years.

In 2006, Hutt was diagnosed with leukemia, and he passed away in the summer of 2007. His contributions to Canadian theatre remain a lasting legacy, cementing his place as a legend of the stage.

William Hutt, a world-renowned Toronto actor, dedicated much of his life to the stage.
