He began studying music at the age of 14, learning to play the mandolin at the Workmen’s Circle Peretz School. During high school, he joined the school orchestra, performing mandolin parts. He later expanded his skills to include the tuba, tenor saxophone, and bass guitar.

Weinzweig’s early musical training led him to compose various pieces for the violin and mandolin. In 1934, he enrolled at the University of Toronto, where he founded and conducted the university orchestra. He graduated that same year.

Realizing his passion for music, John moved to Rochester, New York, to study at the Eastman School of Music, where he was introduced to serial composition techniques. Upon returning to Toronto, Weinzweig began experimenting with surrealism, as evident in his Piano Suite No. 1.

Throughout his career, Weinzweig continued to incorporate surrealist elements into his music, composing for radio programs and documentary dramas. His work spanned numerous musical genres, reflecting his innovative spirit.

Significant Contributions to Music

For over a decade, Weinzweig worked with CBC Radio, composing engaging and beautiful music. In 1948, he returned to concert music, creating notable works such as Divertimento No. 1, String Quartet No. 1, and Suite for Piano No. 2.

In 1951, Weinzweig co-founded the Canadian League of Composers (CLC) alongside Harry Somers and Samuel Dolin. The CLC aimed to support and promote Canadian music, offering scholarships to young composers and increasing performances of Canadian works.

In early 1952, Weinzweig joined the music faculty at the University of Toronto, where he educated several generations of prominent Canadian composers. By the late 1950s, he became a steadfast advocate for Canadian music. In 1957, alongside composer John Beckwith, he proposed the establishment of the Canadian Music Centre, which was subsequently approved.

Weinzweig began his second term as CLC president in 1959, traveling to Europe and Central America to represent the League at various conferences. From 1973 to 1975, he served as president of the Canadian Association of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (CAPAC).

Between 1970 and 2006, Weinzweig’s creative output grew significantly. During this period, he moved away from chamber, orchestral, and dramatic compositions, focusing instead on solo works for various instruments. His later compositions reflected a deep engagement with advanced techniques.

In 1990, Weinzweig expanded his exploration of vocal and theatrical forms, creating dramatic works for plays and performances. His dedication to both creativity and education earned him numerous accolades, including the Order of Canada, the Canada Council Medal, the Molson Prize, and the Toronto Music Prize.

Weinzweig remained active in conferences and continued composing until 2004. He passed away in 2006, leaving behind a profound legacy of work and contributions to Canadian music.
